FUMC Terrell News and Events

We have started a Parenting Support Group, which is held on Wednesday mornings from 8:45 to 10:00 a.m. ALL parents and children, who are not in school at that time, are invited to come to Joyce Lewis’ classroom at Methodist Day School. We’ll discuss such basic parenting dilemmas as eating, sleeping, discipline, and how parents can help each other. Our first session was August 31. Our topic was “Separation Anxiety.” Please join us!!

Becoming a Love and Logic Parent, an approach to raising kids that provides loving support from parents while at the same time expecting kids to be respectful and responsible, will be offered this fall at First UMC on Wednesday nights starting September 21 at 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Love and Logic is a philosophy of raising and teaching children which allows adults to be happier, empowered, and more skilled in their interactions with children. The techniques shared in this course are simple, practical, and easy to learn while taught with a heavy emphasis on respect and dignity for children. The Love and Logic approach helps children develop and grow in a healthy way, provides them with confidence and dignity, and teaches them how to become more responsible.

Shirley Miller, spouse of Rev. Keith L. Head, will be facilitating this course. She has trained in Becoming a Love and Logic Parent and has led this course several times over the last five years. In addition, she has been active in children and family ministries in the United Methodist Church for the last thirty years serving as both paid staff and a volunteer. Most importantly, Shirley and Keith are the parents of three children!

Pre-registration is not required but a fee of $10 will be charged to cover the cost of the workbook.

The Share Center of Terrell (103 West Jones Ave., Terrell) has come up short on many items for local families experiencing great need. Please consider the following and how you can help!

Donations Needed: Food, Clothing: infant to adult

Household Items: appliances, beds, tables, chairs, etc. Please note the following:

• Large items can be picked up (call 972-551-1729)
• Drive through to drop off items-enter from alley across from Rockwall and Brin Church of Christ, 407 N. Rockwall, Terrell

Hours of Opportunities

Wednesdays 8:30-11:30, Thursdays 8:30-3:30

Donations are tax deductible-(ask for a receipt).

Funds from donations are used to:

• Buy food from North Texas Food Bank $4,000 to $5,000 needed ($45,000-$50,000 already spent this year).
• Buy School Supplies and Christmas gifts.

The Country Store needs more items. Everyone can donate something. Just look around your home and gather your unused items and donate them for resale at the Country Store on October 8.

If you have a yard sign from last year’s Country Store please return it to the Church so the date can be changed.

Rev. Keith L. Head is preparing a Pastor’s Bible Study for 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning September 21. Just come as you are with a Bible and a desire to learn!

Our next breakfast will be Sunday, September 11, at 8 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All men are welcome and bring a friend!.

Thanks to all church members who participated and made contributions to our American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team last spring. We won the "Rising Star Award" and earned over $1400 in a very short time. Special thanks to the Pairs and Shares and Unity Sunday School Classes for the $100 donation to the FUMC Relay Team and to Angie and the Youth for their participation.

Come one--come all!!! Play Day is around the corner. Join us for a little fun and a great lunch. We enjoy fellowship, play games, and just chatting to catch up with one another! Play Day will be Thursday, September 15, 10:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. After a morning of fun, we will depart the church around 11:15 a.m. for lunch at Napoli's Restaurant. "Where is this year going? Can you believe it is Labor Day already? We have endured a long, hot, and dry summer but Fall is just around the corner! Vacations are behind us--how about let's spend some time together! Girlfriends of Glory will be having dinner, along with a short meeting and a guest speaker, on Monday, September 12, 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Due to Labor Day encompassing the first Monday of the month, we are moving Girlfriends of Glory to Monday, September 12. Girlfriends is open to ALL women of First United Methodist Church, family, friends, and anyone whom you would like to invite to join us. Our special guest and speaker for September will be Rachel Chism from Church of Christ, Terrell. You won't want to miss hearing Rachel!!! Please join us for dinner, fun, and fellowship! One last note, let's begin thinking about items for Terrell State Hospital Wish List for Christmas. Anne Davidson will be providing a list for us. As many of you know, we included Terrell State Hospital as one of Girlfriends of Glory's missions/charities for 2010 and would like to continue this worthy charity for 2011!!!"

In our 10:50 a.m. Worship Service on Sunday, September 11, the Chancel Choir will sing a memorial song to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the "9/11" attacks on the United States of America. The musical presentation, "Salute to our Fallen Heroes" is a powerful and proud piece that will pull at the heartstrings of all who were impacted by these events. Bringing their musical gifts to the choir will be Matt Morales (tenor), and Matt Renfro (trumpet), both students from A&M commerce. Please come and join us at First United Methodist Church Terrell as we remember our "Fallen Heroes" and give thanks for God's love in the midst of difficult times.
